LIII. How to Apply Your Power of Choice
I must go into exile: does anyone, then, keep me from going with a smile and cheerful and serene?

“I must die: must I, then, die groaning too? I must be fettered: and wailing too? I must go into exile: does anyone, then, keep me from going with a smile and cheerful and serene?” — Epictetus.
An archer prepared to shoot his arrow at a distant target.
He drew his bowstring taut and aimed carefully.
As he focused, the arrow spoke.
“Why do you hesitate?” asked the arrow.
“Release me, and I’ll fly straight to the target.”
The archer replied, “If I release you carelessly, your flight will stray, and the target will be missed.”
The arrow scoffed, “But without action, I’m useless!”
The archer smiled. “And without intention, you’re wasted.”
With a deliberate breath, he released the arrow, which soared directly to the target.
Choice is the most profound act of creation we possess.
It shapes the landscape of our lives through the steady, deliberate sculpting of our minutes, hours, days.
Unlike circumstance or fortune, which are external and fleeting, the power of choice is entirely ours—a tool that, when wielded with truth and clarity, transcends chaos and disorder.
It’s a compass for self-mastery and a beautiful life.
The resilience of our choices lies in their alignment with reality—the raw truth of what needs to be done to live well.
Not the flattering, transient illusions of social validation or material success.
It recognizes the futility of chasing what is popular or convenient at the cost of what is right.
Parties will continue without us; distractions will call out endlessly, and setbacks will visit uninvited.
Yet none of this can derail us unless we allow it.
This discipline—the art of choosing well—demands a deep awareness of what is meaningful versus what is urgent.
The world is full of alluring detours—pleasures that fade, hollow accolades, status that crumbles, shortcuts that lengthen the journey.
It takes courage and a spirit of defiance to resist them, to choose the longer road of steady effort and enduring values.
This courage isn’t innate.
We build it one decision at a time.
Each choice we make in the face of fear or temptation crystallizes our character, transforming us into formidable forces.
Resistance is inevitable, both from within and without.
Our doubts and insecurities can be louder than any external critic.
Others may misunderstand or even oppose our path.
But this practice is resilient in the face of resistance.
It helps us own those crazy moments, reframing them as opportunities to grow stronger, more creative, and to fasten our commitments to the world, our purpose, and other people.
Alive time is born out of what would otherwise be wasted.
For each choice is a ripple that spreads outward, intersecting with other ripples, shaping the world in ways we may never fully see.
Acting in harmony with wisdom ensures that these ripples align with our values, creating consequences we can embrace.
Not regret.
It allows us to move through life with intentionality, free from the burden of compromises made in haste or under pressure.
We do not achieve invincibility by avoiding pain or failure but by understanding their limits.
Heartbreak, rejection, grief—these can batter us, but they cannot destroy the self fortified by truth and virtue.
This self knows that while we cannot control external events, we can control our response to them.
It’s this control, this unshakable focus on what we truly govern, that makes us resilient.
This approach doesn’t dismiss the material or relational aspects of life but reframes them as secondary to the greater goods of virtue and wisdom.
Wealth, love, and recognition aren’t dismissed as inconsequential, for modern life requires security and freedom, but they are stripped of their illusion of supremacy.
They are good only insofar as they harmonize us with the ultimate aim of eudaemonia, flourishing.
In this way, our power to choose becomes an instrument of survival and a means to live fully, deeply, and authentically.
